About The Author

Solomon Northup (1808–c. 1863) was an African American abolitionist and memoirist best known for his autobiographical work, Twelve Years a Slave. Born a free man in New York, Northup was kidnapped and sold into slavery, enduring twelve years of bondage before regaining his freedom. His powerful narrative provides a firsthand account of the brutality of slavery and has been instrumental in historical and cultural discussions on the subject.
